September 15, 11:34 a.m.: Police received a complaint that an excessive number of vehicles are excessively speeding on H Street Road between Valley View Road and Harvey Road. The high speeds endanger pedestrians and other motorists as the road has several residential driveways and limited sight distances due to dips and rises. All officers were advised of the report and the times of day when violations are most frequent.
September 16, 9:46 a.m.: A motorist called police when a very intoxicated pedestrian clutching an open alcohol container almost staggered into her vehicle on H Street. An officer found the nearly plastered pedestrian now weaving down Mitchell Street near H Street, still holding a large can of beer. He took her booze and replaced it with a citation for having an open alcohol container in public. Municipal court happened to be in session at the time, and the lady was given a courtesy ride to court at the judge’s request.
September 16, 2:49 p.m.: Police received an anonymous report of several vehicles with expired tabs stored on city right of way in a residential neighborhood, with one of them obstructing a sidewalk. Officers investigated, tagged six vehicles for impound if not moved, and contacted the owners. The family was very cooperative: they promptly obtained valid licenses for the operable autos, removed one which was no longer running, and made sure the sidewalk was completely open.
September 16, 2:49 p.m.: Police received a report of a vehicle with expired license plates stored on city right of way in a residential neighborhood. An officer investigated and tagged the vehicle for impound if not removed. The owners complied and removed the auto from the roadside in time to avoid a tow bill and ticket.
September 16, 3:19 p.m.: A resident called police when she returned from vacation and discovered that a credit card and cash was stolen from her home while she was away. The card had been used to make almost a dozen purchases across the county. An officer was assigned to investigate and the thief was identified and arrested. A 27-year-old family acquaintance was booked into jail for burglary and theft.
September 17, 12:08 p.m.: A pair of men’s sunglasses were found at Blaine City Hall and turned in to the police department. The glasses were placed into property impound at the police station in hopes their owner will drop by looking for them.
September 17, 2:09 p.m.: An apartment resident called 911 to report three men trespassing in the common area of his complex. Police arrived and interviewed the tenant and the trio of intruders. One of the three was a lawful visitor bringing with him two friends so all had legal right of access. It came to light that before police were called a scuffle had occurred between the parties. The caller had tried to herd the three young men out the complex’s gate by himself, but found his cowboy skills were a little rusty. No one wanted police to pursue the matter and both sides agreed to retreat to their respective corners.
September 17, 4 p.m.: Blaine Police received information that a man in jail on domestic violence charges was violating a court-issued no contact order protecting one of his victims. An officer investigated and found evidence of two violations. A case report was prepared and forwarded to the city prosecutor for review of additional charges.
September 17, 4:54 p.m.: Police received information that a man wanted on arrest warrants might be at a business in Blaine. Officers responded, located the subject and confirmed he had warrants outstanding from Whatcom County and Ferndale Municipal Court. He was arrested, transported to Ferndale and transferred to the custody of Ferndale Police.
September 18, 4 p.m.: A Blaine resident came in to the police department to make a report when she discovered that a charity to which she had made a donation was apparently fraudulent. She provided officers with information about that incident as well as some research about other suspicious charities.
September 18, 10:30 p.m.: An officer stopped a vehicle on Bell Road to let the occupants know that that one of their headlights was out. The driver would probably have been more appreciative if her driving privilege in Washington had not been suspended at the time. She was arrested, cited and released pending a mandatory court hearing for the criminal traffic violation. The vehicle was released to a licensed driver.
September 19, 1:32 p.m.: An officer stopped a car bearing very expired registration tabs. Its driver could not provide a registration document or any proof of insurance and his Washington driver’s license was under suspension for a number of unresolved citations. He was arrested, cited and released pending court on the criminal license violation, and issued traffic infractions for no insurance and expired vehicle registration over two months. The vehicle’s registered owner was not aboard or available, and the auto was impounded.
September 20, 9:25 a.m.: A resident called police to report construction noise of a sort coming from a new residence being built next door. Some moisture barrier material had come loose from a wall and made noise slapping in the morning breeze. An officer left a message for the property owner advising him of the complaint, and later the same day the owner arrived on site and put an end to the bit of a flap.
September 20, 2:18 p.m.: A U.S. Border Patrol agent advised Blaine Police when he encountered a gentleman wandering down H Street Road in his underwear. Before an officer could respond, a relative of the elderly pedestrian arrived on scene to take the man back to the safety of his home nearby.
September 21, 12:33 a.m.: Dispatch reported the fire department was in route to a report from a resident that a strong odor of gasoline was wafting into her home. Police arrived and found that oil and gasoline had apparently leaked from a neighbor’s recently repaired vehicle parked nearby. An officer located the auto’s owner, alerted him to the problem and connected him with the incoming fire trucks and personnel who helped him clean up the spill.
September 21, 1:30 a.m.: Police responded to a report of an emergency at a residence and found a man there having difficulty breathing. The officers assisted the person until medical aid arrived and assisted the medics until they transported the victim to hospital.
September 21, 9:22 a.m.: A passerby called police to report that an elderly black lab was lying along H Street near Harvey Road. The Whatcom Humane Society had been called but was not able to immediately respond. A Blaine officer went to the scene and stayed to protect the apparently uninjured but un-invigorated canine until animal control arrived.
September 21, 1:40 p.m.: Washington State Patrol (WSP) asked Blaine Police to respond when they received a report of a man standing on the edge of the I-5 freeway bridge across Dakota Creek, threatening to leap into the shallow water 60 feet below. Two Blaine officers arrived and were able to talk the man off the railing and into their protective custody. He refused to identify himself and had no ID, but did explain that he was despondent about being evicted from his home in the county. A WSP trooper arrived and assisted by transporting the man to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
September 21, 3:55 p.m.: Blaine Police was dispatched to the Peace Arch Port when Customs and Border Protection officers encountered a traveler with a suspended drivers license. An officer arrived and verified that the California resident was driving in violation of his suspension. He was arrested, cited and released with a mandatory court summons and his vehicle was impounded.
September 21, 5:55 p.m.: Passersby called 911 when they heard a woman’s loud screams of pain and alarm and sounds of a fight coming from an apartment on H Street. The arriving officers also heard the cries inside and they received no response except more yelling when they announced themselves at the doors. Upon entry the officers discovered a man and woman in the bathroom locked in a no holds barred battle, with their cat. The sodden creature did not want to be bathed and was clawing its way through its captors to freedom. The officers made sure no bandages or veterinarians were needed then went back outside to reassure the worried neighbors.
September 22, 7:35 a.m.: An officer investigating a driving suspension complaint at the Peace Arch port of entry was alerted to another arriving motorist whose privilege to drive in Washington state was also under suspension for failure to take care of a prior traffic violation. This second driver was also arrested, cited and released to a mandatory criminal court appearance.
September 22, 4:30 p.m.: An officer on patrol came upon a vehicle stopped dead on the truck route at H Street. The hapless driver had run out of fuel just a block short of the gas station, and came to a halt blocking the entire lane. With the help of a nearby Border Patrol agent the officer was able to push the car to the safety of the roadway shoulder. The motorist declined a ride in the police car to the gas station and set out on foot to purchase fuel.
September 22, 10:52 p.m.: An officer on patrol saw that a car traveling northbound on Mitchell Street had a broken right tail light and brake light. He stopped the auto on H Street and contacted its driver. The gentleman could not produce a driver’s license or vehicle registration, and after a few minutes of conversation admitted that his Washington driving status was suspended and the car belonged to a friend. The friend responded to the scene to confirm the story and collect his vehicle, and the errant driver was released with a criminal citation and mandatory court date.
September 22, 9:05 p.m.: An officer patrolling Semiahmoo spit found a passenger van parked at a city park picnic shelter area. The van was unoccupied but its passenger compartment side door was standing open, exposing the belongings lying about inside. The officer searched the nearby shoreline and trails and encountered a large family walking back to their van after watching the sunset and stargazing. The last youngster to escape the van had forgotten to shut the door, but everything inside was still intact.
