August 12, 9:30 a.m.: A man called police for assistance when people parking their cars on a neighbor’s front lawn began also parking in his yard. The caller took a photo of the offending car’s license plate to document the problem, and someone immediately came out to move the car away from the caller’s yard.
August 12, 1:30 p.m.: A patrol officer came upon a pair of motorists who had just been involved in a fender-bender at the intersection of 6th and H streets. No one had been inured in the crash and the damage to both vehicles was minimal. The motorist who had rear-ended the other was cited for following too closely and issued a criminal citation for driving while license suspended.
August 12, 1:32 p.m.: A resident came into the Blaine Police Department to report that a person had stolen some items from her car and from her home. An officer completed a case report and is investigating the crime.
August 12, 3:12 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to the intersection of Peace Portal and Bell Road for a broken railroad barricade crossing arm, and arrived to find the northbound crossing arm lying at the side of the road. Bystanders reported that the arms had been raising and lowering on their own. Police stayed on scene until a crew arrived to fix the problem. It appeared that a crew working near Portal and Loomis Trail Rd had accidentally activated the Bell Road intersection safety signal.
August 12, 6:05 p.m.: The security division of a company asked Blaine police to respond to their Blaine facility and assist a manager who would be arriving to check their locked building after hours. The assistance was provided and the security was re-contacted at the end of the service.
August 13, 1:30 a.m.: While interviewing several suspects regarding multiple incidents of malicious mischief, the officer learned of damage to an abandoned house. The officer went to the property and confirmed that there was extensive damage to the interior of the building. The vandalism was investigated and a case report was forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor.
August 13, 10:42 a.m.: An officer contacted a person by phone regarding possible harassment by an estranged spouse. The officer determined that no crime had occurred. The incident was documented and the reporting party was asked to call 911 if the problem continues.
August 13, 1:59 p.m.: While attempting to park his car in a business parking lot, an elderly, disabled man lost control of his vehicle, which spun a couple of circles before crashing into another elderly, disabled man’s parked car. No one was injured in the crash but each vehicle sustained moderate damage. At the vehicle owners’ request a tow truck was called to separate the vehicles while an officer helped the vehicles’ owners exchange information and investigated the collision.
August 13, 5:45 p.m.: U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported they were interviewing a person who had driven up to the U.S. crossing from Canada, and discovered that the traveler’s permission to drive in Washington had been suspended by the state’s department of licensing. A Blaine officer responded and confirmed the suspension. The motorist was arrested for the criminal license violation and released with a citation and mandatory court date.
August 13, 6:33 p.m.: A resident reported that after returning from a week’s vacation she noticed a couple pieces of jewelry missing from her bedroom. The victim was able to provide information on people who had access to her home in her absence, and the case is under investigation.
August 14, 4:30 p.m.: An officer assisted an elderly woman with dementia by giving her a courtesy ride to her home in Birch Bay. Upon arriving at the house he discovered the doors were all locked, but he was able to locate a key to let the lady back into her residence.
August 15, 11:04 a.m.: A number of motorists called police to report that the railroad crossing arms were stuck in the down position on Bell Road at Peace Portal Drive. Police responded to the area within minutes. A BNSF crew was already on scene, directing traffic and repairing the problem.
August 15, noon: An officer on patrol discovered a storage container near a home that had been damaged by a sad excuse for spray-painted graffiti. The damage was documented and is being investigated.
August 16, 12:29 a.m.: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was interviewing a person at the Peace Arch crossing who had driven a vehicle from Canada into the U.S., stopped at the inspection booths, made a U-turn and attempted to head back to Canada but was stopped by a gate. The CBP personnel on site suspected that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and called Blaine police. An officer responded to investigate and confirmed probable cause that the woman was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested, processed and booked in to jail, and her car was impounded.
August 16, 1:13 a.m.: Staff at a hotel called police for assistance with some intoxicated guests who were roaming the interior and exterior of the facility happily disturbing the peace and repose of tenants who were trying to sleep. The responding officer found a sober person among the celebrants to help herd his friends and associates to their rooms.
August 16, 3:15 a.m.: A hotel’s staff called police when they received a report of a fight occurring in one of their rooms. A Blaine police officer responded and was assisted at the scene by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. They went to the room with a hotel employee but no sounds of fighting could be heard above the din of rock music from inside. The guest who answered their knocks was holding a blaring boom box but was apparently too intoxicated to turn it off without police assistance. The musician was visiting the room’s tenants, so officers escorted him back to his own room and extracted from him a promise to quietly remain there.
August 16, 3:57 p.m.: Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) called Blaine police to notify officers that an individual detained at CBSA had revealed he had buried a firearm in Lincoln Park before traveling to Canada. An officer drove to the parked and located what appeared to be fresh footprints leading a nearby trail. The officer located the firearm and 28 rounds of small caliber ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were collected and secured, and later returned to the owner as part of the investigation.
August 17, 3:07 a.m.: The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office requested Blaine police assistance with a loud party complaint just outside of the city limits. Officers arrived and brought a peaceful end to the celebration then cleared without further incident.
August 17, 11:21 a.m.: Child Protective Services (CPS) called Blaine police regarding a parent who was disabled by overuse of alcohol and unable to care for her child in the residence. Officers arrived and contacted the mother and her youngster. They arranged for the parent to be evaluated by medics and transported to hospital for treatment. Her child was taken into protective custody and released to CPS for care.
August 17, 8:48 p.m.: A concerned citizen who had come upon two unclothed young children wandering in an intersection at dusk called officers. The kids were identified and her mother was found nearby. This was the second time the children were located wandering without adult supervision and a report was forwarded to Child Protective Services.
